Of steam engines and tractors
The unusual collection of agricultural machines and equipment from the first half of the 20th century forms the basis of a large exhibition on agricultural technology in the Dr. Helmut-Ottenjann-Halle of the Museumsdorf.
It shows not only the living conditions of pre-industrial agricultural society, but also conveys insights into the time in which mechanisation began to increasingly define the lives of the people.
In 1890, agriculture in the area of Weser-Ems was still the employer for around half of the population. Today, the figure is around three per cent of the inhabitants. Behind these numbers hides a fundamental change in day-to-day agriculture. The exhibition shows agriculture in this area of tension with perseverance and the need to rationalise.
